S&Ds lead call for recognition of Palestine
Following the large vote of the European Parliament in favour of the resolution for the recognition of the Palestinian state, the Socialists and Democrats Group stressed the importance of this outcome for the peace process. This outcome comes as a result of the S&D Group’s determination in pursuing this resolution, with the conviction that this will reinforce the tide of recognition among member states.
S&D Group president Gianni Pittella MEP commented:
„This is an historic moment for Palestine, Israel and the European Union. Finally, after years of harsh debate, we can clearly say the European Parliament supports the recognition of the State of Palestine.
„This decision was agreed today by a large majority in the Parliament thanks to the tireless commitment of the Socialists and Democrats Group. It will reinforce the tide of support already seen across Europe.
„This resolution, most importantly, stressed the overwhelming conviction in Europe that time has come to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states living side-by-side in peace and security. Europe, through the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, Federica Mogherini, must now play a decisive role in the peace process, contributing to stopping the endless spiral of violence.”
S&D foreign affairs co-ordinator Richard Howitt MEP, who led the negotiations with other parties to reach agreement on the text, added:
„It is right that the European Parliament reflects the initiative for Palestinian recognition which is sweeping parliaments across Europe and today we have agreed that this should be a common position for all of the European Union.
„We know this is being discussed by EU foreign ministers and this is a clear signal that European countries should give their support if the debate expected on the issue in the UN this week takes place.
„I am proud that the S&Ds have led on this proposal, but the strength of support amongst five major party groupings in the Parliament sends a strong message of Europe-wide support for the principle of Palestinian statehood.
„European recognition of Palestinian statehood is not an alternative to either a two-state solution or to peace talks to achieve it, but gives a vital impetus to both.”
S&D vice-president for foreign affairs, Victor Boştinaru MEP, concluded:
„Today a united European Parliament joined forces and offered a new hope for the people of the Middle East. I believe that the creation and the viable existence of a Palestinian state is a prerequisite for peace. I also take this opportunity to call on Israel to recognise the Palestinian state and on both sides to continue negotiations and to commit to a final status agreement.”
