S&Ds condemn further barbaric Daesh atrocity in Libya
The Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament today condemned the barbaric beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians by Daesh (the self-proclaimed Islamic State or ISIS) and called for a common front against terrorism.
Reacting to this latest brutal act, the president of the S&D Group, Gianni Pittella MEP, said:
„The beheading of 21 Egyptian citizens by terrorists in Libya is a new demonstration of the brutality of Daesh. It is a new attack against the people of the region. The S&D Group, the entire EU and all civilised countries, whatever their beliefs or religion, must stand by Egypt and with all countries facing terrorism.
„We call on the EU to work with regional and international partners to co-ordinate the way forward in order to tackle this threat to global stability together.”
Victor Boştinaru MEP, S&D vice-president for foreign affairs, added:
„The brutal killing of the Egyptian Christians in Libya is appalling. It is an act of unprecedented cruelty and represents a red alert for Egypt, Libya, Europe and the all international community. While an international coalition is trying to defeat Daesh in Syria and Iraq, this terrorist organisation is increasing its power in Libya.
„We want to express our full solidarity with Egypt, which is facing an increasing number of terrorist threats, internally and abroad.
„Negotiations on Libya must be reinforced to produce tangible results as the threat from Daesh becomes bigger every day.”
