Escalation of violence in Jerusalem must stop to give way to negotiations, say S&Ds
The latest tensions in Jerusalem demonstrate the need for an end to the escalation of violence, with negotiations restarting immediately.
S&D MEP and vice-president for foreign affairs Victor Boştinaru said:
„The S&D Group is extremely worried about the recent escalation of violence in Jerusalem and in the West Bank. We condemn the deadly attacks and use of force, both against Israelis and Palestinians. We express our condolences to the families of those who died and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.
„These acts of violence not only bring additional suffering to the population, but they are also endangering the peace process.
„We have to make sure that the escalation is not here to stay and we strongly condemn all incitements to further violence. At the same time, it is of utmost importance for the Israelis to show seriousness in maintaining the status quo of the Haram-al-Sharif (El Aqsa Mosque)/Temple Mount and end occupation.
„The new attacks are only confirming that the recent policies from both sides have not helped to improve the security of Israelis and Palestinians citizens, but have instead allowed the situation to get worse.
„Considering the real risk of escalation, we call on both sides to cooperate. It is of utmost importance that all sides use all means at their disposal to condemn acts of violence, de-escalate the situation and start immediately taking serious steps for a political solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, through negotiations.”
