Written declaration regarding the Danube Delta
Having regard the importance of the Danube Delta.
Having regard the unique character of the Biodiversity and the fact that the Danube Delta is situated in the end of the Danube course and that all the hydrographical process are producing cumulated effects in the Delta.
Having regard that the Delta, as biotope, do have a regenerating capacity but that the existent equilibriums can be easily destroyed as the result of the pollution, and by the infrastructural projects and in general by the human intervention all along the Danube River.
Whereas the participants of the events on the “Danube Delta : Nature and sustainability in Europe” representing political groups , the scientific community , Non-governmental organisations and companies playing a high role in the protection of the Environment, decided to sign the Declaration:
1. Invite the Committee on Environment and the Committee on Regional Development of the European Parliament to complete a fact-finding mission in the Danube Delta as soon as possible.
2. Propose to the Commissioner on the Environment, Stavros Dimas, in order to create a working group dedicate to the hydrographical basin and having as objective the elaboration and implementation of a set of political measures to fight the pollution under the survey of the European Commission in order to protect the flora and fauna in this area.
3. Invite all the European Union Member States and the European Union partner States on the riverside of the Danube to implement, in good faith all the necessary measures.
